Ask the Website Agent for a change

Updated

The Website Agent is an AI agent that changes your site when you describe the change in a message. It reads the site, makes the change, checks the live page, and shows each change with a screenshot and an Undo button. Each conversation is about one site.

Open the Website Agent

You can open the agent from three places.

  • On the site's page, select Open Website Agent in the header.
  • In the editor, select Ask the Website Agent in the header.
  • In the sidebar, select Agent. Then choose the site in the Site list, which says "Choose a site". The agent works on one site in each conversation, and the first message fixes the site.

The page opens on the site's latest conversation, or on an empty conversation when the site has none. An empty conversation asks "What should the agent change on" and the business name, and lists four examples:

  • Change the phone number to 931 234 567
  • Add a Team section with four people and link it from the menu
  • Make the buttons dark green
  • Find where "free estimate" is written

The Conversations list shows your conversations about the site, newest activity first. Select New conversation to start another one. A conversation that has a request in progress carries the label "Working".

Write your request

Type your request in the Message box and select Send message, or press Enter. Press Shift and Enter to start a new line. A message holds up to 4,000 characters, and the counter appears from 3,600.

Describe the result you want in your own words. Give the exact text when the agent has to write something that only you know. The agent writes a contact detail, such as a phone number, an email address, or an address, only when the site already holds it or your message contains it. It writes a customer review or a rating only when your message contains it word for word.

Under the box, a line says how many agent credits the workspace has left. Agent credits explains what a request costs.

The agent's work doesn't depend on the page. If you close the page or lose the connection, the agent keeps working on your request, and the page shows its progress when you open it again.

Attach images

Select Attach image to add a PNG, JPEG, or WebP picture to your message, for example a photo to use on a page. A message takes up to 4 images. Each picture shows as a chip under the box, and Send message waits while a picture uploads. The agent can also generate an image when you ask for one.

Follow the agent's work

While the agent works, the conversation says "The agent is working…" and shows its reply as it writes. Select the steps disclosure, named "Show the agent's" and the number of steps, to see what it did, for example "Read the site's content", "Applied a change", and "Checked /about/ on the live site". A step reads "(running)", "(done)", or "(failed)". When the agent searched the web, the reply lists its Sources.

The agent works on one message at a time. A message that you send while it works waits and says "Waiting for the agent to finish your previous message."

Read a change card

Each change the agent makes appears as a card with these parts:

  • The one-line summary of the change.
  • The change number, the time in UTC, and the pages the change touched.
  • A screenshot of each page the agent checked after the change. Select a screenshot to enlarge it.
  • An Undo button, which reverses the change. Undo changes and restore snapshots explains how undo works.

When a change touches details that Google also shows, such as the address or the phone number, the card reminds you to make the same change in the business's Google Business Profile. When you ask for colours with low contrast, it says that some text now has less contrast than the 4.5:1 that WCAG AA asks for, because you asked for these colours.

After each request, the conversation shows how many agent credits it used, for example "Used 212 agent credits".

Stop or cancel a request

  • Select Stop while the agent works. The button reads "Stopping…" until the agent ends. The conversation then says "You stopped the agent. It applied the changes shown above, and nothing after them." Each change it applied has its Undo button.
  • Select Cancel message on a message that is still waiting. The conversation then says "You cancelled this message." A message that the agent has already started can't be cancelled. Use Stop for it.

If the agent can't work on the site

Some states stop the agent before it starts. A notice appears above the Message box, Send message stays inactive, and the earlier conversation stays readable.

  • The site runs an older release of the Local Service Core plugin. The notice says "The editor and the Website Agent need version 0.3.0 or later of the Local Service Core plugin" and names the version the site runs. Select Open WP Admin, update Local Service Core under Plugins, and reload the page.
  • The site is offline on our servers. The notice says "This site can't be edited right now, because it's offline on our servers." and gives the support address.
  • The workspace has no agent credits or no plan, or the agent is switched off. Agent credits describes each notice.

If the agent asks you to confirm a change instead of making it, read Confirm deletions, links, and restores.
